Cheesy Caramelized Onion Pig Shots

These Cheesy Caramelized Onion Pig Shots would actually be recipe “part 2” of a yummy snack-fest.

“Part 1” would be making this Caramelized Onion Gruyere Cheese Dip 😉

So you get to enjoy TWO rounds of deliciousness when using the leftover dip as the pig shot filling!

If you didn’t want to make this dip from scratch, they have some store bought varieties of caramelized onion dip at most larger grocery stores.

How to Make Cheesy Caramelized Onion Pig Shots

Since we are using leftover dip, it’s really only three ingredients.

Dip, smoked, sausage, and thick cut bacon.

The thick but bacon is key here, regular bacon would not be sturdy enough.

ingredients for the pig shots

First, slice the smoked sausage into about half inch slices.

You should get around 20 slices.

Then cut the thick cut bacon in half and wrap each slice around the sausage slices, overlapping slightly.

Secure the overlapped part with a toothpick and it should look like a little shot glass.

The dip should be cold or at room temperature when stuffing these.

I had the best luck just stuffing with my hands.

A messy job but well worth it 🙂

filled shots before cooking

I put my pig shots on my Traeger grill/ smoker set to 350 degrees for 45 minutes to an hour.

They can also be baked on a wire baking rack over a baking sheet at the same time and temp.

Remove them when the bacon is cooked to your liking.

Just watch them closely during the last half of cooking.

Cook time will depend on how thick the bacon is, and especially on the Traeger, the temperature can fluctuate.

I hope you enjoy Cheesy Caramelized Onion Pig Shots as much as my family did!

Ingredients

  • 1 pound smoked sausage
  • 10 slices thick cut bacon
  • 20 toothpicks
  • 2 cups caramelized onion cheese dip (store bought or recipe link in post above)

Instructions

  1. Slice the smoked sausage (about half inch thick and you should get around 20 slices total) and cut the bacon in half.

  2. Wrap each piece of bacon around each sausage slice, attempting to make each look like a shot glass with the sausage as the bottom. Put a toothpick through where the bacon overlaps, through the bacon and into the sausage.

  3. Fill each with the caramelized onion cheese dip.

Note: This works best if it is cold or at room temperature.

  4. Cook according to one of these methods:

Traeger/ Pellet Grill: Set the temperature to 350 degrees and place the pig shots on the grate for 45 minutes to 1 hour (keep an eye on them and remove when the bacon is done to your liking).

Oven: Cook in a 350 degree oven for 45 minutes to 1 hour on a wire baking rack over a baking sheet.
