Honey Hot Chicken Wings

Honey Hot Chicken Wings were our second recipe of the day for our Sunday Funday with the kids (and dogs)!

Our first snack was Veggie and Hummus Flatbreads, and they were phenomenal.

These wings can be cooked on the smoker or Traeger pellet grill and were the perfect sweet and spicy combo!

How to Make Honey Hot Chicken Wings

I started them by tossing olive oil, chili powder, garlic powder, cayenne pepper, kosher salt, and pepper with the wings in a bowl.

Then on to the smoker!

Lucky for us we have a Traeger and it regulates the temperature beautifully.

As it turns out this day was only 15 degrees!

No worries though, they still took the regular time of two and a half hours to cook.

I did flip them halfway through cooking.

And brushed them a few times with this honey hot sauce during the last half hour of cooking.

The sauce is a cup of buffalo sauce, 3/4 cup of honey, and 3 Tbsps butter in a saucepan.

Bring it up to a boil, reduce the heat to low and simmer for about five minutes.

The sweet and spicy sauce caramelizes on these Honey Hot Chicken Wings making them extra yummy.

After smelling these on the smoker for so long, the kids and husband were practically drooling by the time I brought them in.

We drizzled more of the honey hot sauce over top as well.

A sticky and messy wing, yes…but oh so delicious!

Honey Hot Chicken Wings

Ingredients

  • 4 pounds jumbo split chicken wings
  • 1 Tbsp olive oil
  • 1 Tbsp chili powder
  • 1/2 Tbsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 to 1 tsp cayenne pepper (more or less depending on spice level you prefer)
  • kosher salt, pepper
  • 1 cup buffalo sauce
  • 3/4 cup honey
  • 3 Tbsps butter

Instructions

  1. Pat the wings dry with paper towels. Toss them in a large bowl with the olive oil, chili powder, garlic powder, cayenne pepper, kosher salt, and pepper until evenly coated.

  2. In a saucepan add the hot sauce, honey, and butter. Bring to a boil and reduce heat to simmer, whisking occasionally, for 5 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside.

  3. Place the chicken wings in a smoker set to 250 degrees for two and a half hours. Flip them halfway through. Brush with the honey hot sauce during the last half hour of cooking. Check the internal temp to make sure they are at 170 degrees before serving.

    These can also be baked in the oven: Place wings on a lined baking sheet and put in a 400 degree oven for 45 minutes, flip them halfway through. Brush with the honey hot sauce during the last 15 minutes of cooking.

  4. Serve the wings with the remaining sauce on the side for dipping.
