Grilled Margherita Flatbreads

Although I could always go for a frozen margarita pretty much anytime, today we are having a meatless/ vegetarian recipe for Grilled Margherita Flatbreads.

Before you go and think I’ve lost my mind, we are not having a MARGARITA flatbread, we are having MARGHERITA flatbreads.

By definition a Margherita Flatbread is simply a pizza or flatbread with mozzarella, tomatoes, and fresh basil.

If you’re like me a few years ago I was quite confused also before I knew the difference.

So that was your vocabulary lesson for the day…now for the history lesson 🙂

This dish is named after Queen Margherita of Italy in 1889.

She asked her pizza maker to create a pizza with the colors of the Italian flag and this is what he came up with.

Alright, enough learning and onto the actual recipe 😉

How to make Grilled Margherita Flatbreads

Most Margherita pizzas are made with crushed San Marzano tomatoes, but I am using fresh diced tomatoes from my garden.

I got a two pack of Stonefire Naan Breads and brushed them with olive oil and garlic paste.

Then topped with thick slices of fresh mozzarella cheese and diced tomatoes.

A little sprinkle of kosher salt and pepper and they are ready for the grill.

My grill was preheated to 350 degrees.

Keep a close eye on that grill temp though, open the grill door if needed to let out some heat.

We basically just need the cheese to melt and the crust to crisp.

So keeping it around 350 degrees is perfect.

Mine took around 12 minutes.

Grilled Margherita Flatbreads

Tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, and basil on a flatbread crust and grilled to perfection

Ingredients

  • 1 2-pack Stonefire Naan Bread
  • 2 Tbsps olive oil
  • 1 Tbsp garlic paste or minced garlic
  • 6 oz fresh mozzarella cheese sliced
  • 2 medium tomatoes diced
  • kosher salt, pepper
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh basil

Instructions

  1. Lay the Naan bread on a tray. Brush the tops with the olive oil and garlic.

  2. Divide the sliced mozzarella and tomatoes evenly on top of the Naan flatbreads. Sprinkle with kosher salt and pepper.

    Note: It is ok if there are gaps between the cheese slices, it will melt and spread out to cover the whole flatbread.

  3. Place the Naan flatbreads on a grill preheated to 350 degrees. Close the lid for 10 to 14 minutes, checking occasionally. Once the cheese is melted and the Naan bread is crispy enough for you, remove from the grill and sprinkle with fresh basil.
