Tacos and Tequila Chicken Wings

All of my weirdness instantly thought of a Tacos and Tequila Chicken Wings recipe recently as part of my Cinco de Mayo Party Food… let me explain…

A few weeks ago my oldest daughter sang at a taco restaurant and bar and they had a sign that said “Tacos and Tequila”…now your typical person would probably not have thought much about it.

How to Make Tacos and Tequila Chicken Wings

Chicken wings with taco seasoning and a sweet and spicy tequila glaze, seemed to make perfect sense to me 🙂

My taco seasoning is a blend of chili powder, paprika, garlic powder, kosher salt, pepper, cumin, cinnamon, and ground red pepper for a little heat.

Save some of the seasoning for the tequila glaze.

Sprinkle the rest over 3 pounds of chicken wings.

Tacos and Tequila Chicken Wings

I made these wings in our Traeger smoker, but they could also be baked in the oven.

For the smoker, just set to 250 and smoke for 2 1/2 hours, turning halfway through.

As the wings cooked I made the tequila glaze.

Whisk together tequila, honey, orange juice, lime juice, hot sauce, and the taco seasoning that I set aside earlier.

Bring this to a boil, reduce heat to simmer for 20 minutes.

I brushed the glaze on both sides right before taking them off of the smoker.

Serve Tacos and Tequila Chicken Wings with kosher salt sprinkled over top, lime wedges, and cilantro on the side.

And heck, maybe even a shot of tequila on the side 😉

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon chili powder
  • 1 tablespoon paprika
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon kosher salt
  • 1/2 tablespoon cumin
  • 1/2 tablespoon pepper
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ground red pepper
  • 3 pounds split chicken wings
  • 1 1/2 cups tequila
  • 8 ounces honey
  • 1/4 cup fresh squeezed orange juice
  • 1/4 cup fresh squeezed lime juice
  • zest of 1 lime
  • 1/4 cup hot sauce of choice
  • Optional: more kosher salt, lime wedges, and cilantro leaves

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, add the chili powder, paprika, garlic powder, kosher salt, cumin, pepper, cinnamon, and ground red pepper. Stir until evenly mixed. Set 1 Tbsp of this taco seasoning aside to use for the sauce. Sprinkle the rest of the taco seasoning on all sides of the chicken wings.

  2. Cook the chicken wings according to one of the following methods:

In the oven: Place wings on a lined baking sheet and put in a 400 degree oven for 45 minutes, flip them halfway through.

In the smoker: Place the wings in a smoker set to 250 degree for 2 and a half hours. Flip them them halfway through.

Use a thermometer to make sure they are 170 degrees.

  3. As the wings cook, make the glaze by adding tequila, honey, orange juice, lime juice, lime zest, hot sauce, and the reserved 1 Tbsp of the taco seasoning to a saucepan. Whisk together and bring to a boil, reduce the heat to low and simmer for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Note: This glaze will thicken more when it’s at room temperature. Serve warm for best consistency.

  4. Brush the glaze on both sides of the wings before serving. Sprinkle with more kosher salt and serve with more lime wedges and cilantro if desired.
