Easy Cheesy Meatball Calzones

Easy Cheesy Meatball Calzones

Not only are easy cheesy meatball calzones super simple to make, they were a HUGE hit with the family!

There may or may not have been a small fight over the leftovers đŸ˜‰

You really can’t beat a cheap and easy recipe that pleases everyone, am I right?!

As you can see, I am taking some help from store bought ingredients with using frozen meatballs and pizza crust in a tube.

Hey I’m not ashamed, I’m not a fancy chef… I’m a busy mom and using these products helps me maintain somewhat of my sanity;)

Ingredients for the easy calzones

How to make easy cheesy meatball calzones

First we will roll out the pizza crust trying to create a thinner rectangle.

Rolling out the pizza crust

Then use a pizza cutter to cut the crust in half both ways creating four smaller rectangles.

I thawed the meatballs ahead of time, I used 10 total.

Just cut them in half in place cut side down on one side of each rectangle.

Adding meatball to the pizza crust

Next comes the cheesy goodness!

Sprinkle some mozzarella cheese and also some shredded parmesan over the meatballs.

And some garlic powder, Italian seasoning, and crushed red pepper flakes if your family likes a little spice.

Then fold the empty side over the filled side.

I was a little nervous the first time I made calzones this way, but you would be surprised how stretchy this pizza crust is.

Use the back of a fork to crimp the edges closed, I did this twice to make sure they didn’t open in the oven.

Then carefully transfer them to a baking sheet.

And melt 2 tablespoons of butter along with more garlic powder and Italian seasoning.

Brush the butter over top of the calzones and now we are ready for the oven!

Into a 400 degree oven for about 14 to 18 minutes.

Keep an eye on them toward the end of cooking and remove them once the crust is cooked how you prefer.

I am a little extra I suppose, because I did add some more parmesan cheese over top to make them look prettier.

Ingredients

  • 1 tube pizza crust (I used Pillsbury)
  • 10 frozen, precooked meatballs thawed
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup shredded parmesan cheese (plus more to sprinkle over top)
  • garlic powder, Italian seasoning, crushed red pepper flakes
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter
  • 1 cup pizza or marinara sauce for dipping

Instructions

  1. Roll the pizza crust on a flat surface. Use a rolling pin to thin it out into a rectangle and use a pizza cutter to cut the center both horizontally and vertically, creating four smaller rectangles.

  2. Cut the thawed meatballs in half.

  3. To one side of each piece of dough add some meatballs, mozzarella, parmesan, garlic powder, Italian seasoning, and crushed red pepper flakes. Fold the empty side over the filled side and press the seams shut. Use a fork to press down on the seams to make sure they don't open during baking.

  4. Place the calzones on a lined baking sheet. Mix the melted butter with more garlic powder and Italian seasoning and brush over each calzone.

  5. Bake in a 400 degree oven for 14 to 18 minutes. Remove from the oven when the crust is cooked how you prefer.

  6. Serve with more parmesan cheese over top if desired and with the pizza or marinara sauce for dipping.
