Chili Cheese Dog Calzones
If you are from the Cincinnati area, this recipe for Chili Cheese Dog Calzones does not sound weird at all.
Perhaps some of you may be questioning this madness.
Around where I’m from we are obsessed with Skyline Cincinnati style chili… and yes, we enjoy it over spaghetti with cheese, AND on a hot dog bun in the form of a cheese coney.
The idea to turn this yumminess into calzones was from my husband and they were incredible!
How to make Chili Cheese Dog Calzones
Any leftover homemade chili or canned chili will work.
I am using some canned Skyline chili, and I refrigerated it so it’s very cold.
This will prevent it from running all over when filling the calzones.
Also a tube of pizza crust, hot dogs, and shredded cheese.

Unroll the tube of pizza crust on a cutting board or flat surface.
Use a rolling pin to thin the dough out.
Then use a pizza cutter to create 4 smaller rectangle size pieces of dough.
As you can tell… perfection was not my goal here 😉

Traditionally, a cheese coney or chili cheese dog is served with mustard and onions, although these are optional.
I added some mustard and a hot dog cut in half to one side of each piece of dough.
However, I would recommend cutting the hot dogs into smaller slices to distribute them more evenly.

Then a few spoonfuls of the cold chili and a heaping pile of shredded cheddar cheese.
It’s ok if some runs down over the dough.
Fill as much as you can, but just know that overfilled calzones may leak when baking.
That’s not necessarily a bad thing, as any leaked chili can be scooped over top when serving.

Fold the empty side of each piece of dough over the filled side.
And use a fork to crimp the edges shut.
Some cheese and chili may poke through, no worries though.

Carefully transfer the calzones to a lined baking sheet and brush with melted butter.
You can give them another round of crimping them closed with the fork if needed.
I also added some chives for a bright pop of color.

Bake in a 400 degree oven for 14 to 18 minutes.

And I highly recommend serving with hot sauce and oyster crackers.
I think this is just because I am so used to having my Skyline with both the crackers and hot sauce.

Enjoy tasty Chili Cheese Dog Calzones for a fun and easy dinner!

Chili Cheese Dog Calzones
Chili Cheese Dog Calzones have everything yummy in a chili cheese coney stuffed inside pizza crust and baked for a fun dinner idea!
Ingredients
- 1 tube pizza crust (I used Pillsbury)
- Optional: yellow mustard, diced onion
- 4 hot dogs sliced in half, or in smaller diced pieces
- 1 to 1 1/2 cups chili (leftover homemade or canned, I used canned Skyline chili) very cold
- 1 to 1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 tablespoon melted butter
- Optional: hot sauce, oyster crackers
Instructions
-
Roll the pizza crust on a flat surface. Use a rolling pin to thin it out into a rectangle and use a pizza cutter to cut the center both horizontally and vertically, creating four smaller rectangles.
-
To one side of each piece of dough add yellow mustard and/or onion if desired, some of the sliced hot dogs. cold chili, and shredded cheese.
Note: Cold chili will be less likely to run off the crust, stuff as much chili and cheese that you can fit. Very full calzones may leak some chili as they cook, but you can serve any extra chili on the baking sheet scooped over top of the calzones.
-
Fold the empty side over the filled side and press the seams shut. Use a fork to press down on the seams to make sure they don't open during baking, I pressed a few times on each calzone.
-
Place the calzones on a lined baking sheet and brush the melted butter over each calzone. Bake in a 400 degree oven for 14 to 18 minutes. Remove from the oven when the crust is cooked how you prefer.
-
Serve with hot sauce and/or oyster crackers if desired.
