Smoked Cherry Bourbon Ham

Smoked Cherry Bourbon Ham

If you’re planning for an upcoming holiday meal, or just wanting to make an extra special recipe for the heck of it… might I suggest Smoked Cherry Bourbon Ham?!?!

The sweet flavor of the glaze with the salty ham is perfect!

And for as extraordinary as this meal is, it’s pretty simple because most of the work is done by the smoker.

How to Make Smoked Cherry Bourbon Ham

Start with a good quality spiral sliced ham. Mine was 6 pounds.

If you go with a lower quality it just won’t be as tasty.

Set your smoker or Traeger pellet grill to 250 degrees and place the ham right on the grate for an hour.

While the ham is on the smoker or pellet grill, make the cherry bourbon glaze.

Which starts with a 6 ounce container of cherries.

Pour the whole bottle, juice and all, into a saucepan.

Then add the bourbon, brown sugar, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce, honey, garlic powder, ginger powder, and ground cinnamon.

Bring this to a boil and then reduce the heat to medium low for 12 to 15 minutes, stirring a few times.

When it’s a nice, thick glaze-like consistency mash the cherries slightly.

I used a potato masher, but the back of a fork or spoon would work too.

After about an hour on the smoker, remove the ham and carefully transfer to a dish or foil pan.

Pour either some or all of the glaze over the ham. This will depend on if you want to save some to serve with the ham.

Place it back in the smoker for another 1 to 1 1/2 hours or until the internal temperature is 140 degrees.

Oh, and if the glaze seems to be sticking to the bottom of the pan just add a small amount of water.

Smoked Cherry Bourbon Ham is stunning 🙂

Since it’s already sliced, it’s easy to serve and soaks up more smoky flavor than an unsliced ham.

Enjoy with the extra glaze drizzled over top if desired 🙂

Ingredients

  • 5 to 7 pound spiral sliced ham
  • 6 oz jar Maraschino cherries (if they have stems remove the stems)
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 3/4 cup bourbon
  • 3 Tbsps honey
  • 3 Tbsps Worcestershire sauce
  • 3 Tbsps dijon mustard
  • 1 tsp ground ginger
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Set your smoker to 250 and put the ham directly on the grate for 1 hour.

  2. Put the cherries (with juice), brown sugar, bourbon, honey, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, ginger, garlic, and cinnamon in a saucepan. Bring to a boil and reduce the heat to medium low and simmer 12 to 15 minutes, stirring a few times.

Note: Watch carefully as it comes to a boil, if it starts to bubble over just remove from the heat for a moment.

  3. Mash the cherries (I used a potato masher).

  4. Carefully transfer the ham to a casserole dish or foil pan. Pour some or all the glaze over the ham (depending on if you want to save some to serve drizzled over top).

  5. Place it back on the smoker for 1 to 1 1/2 more hours or until internal temperature is 140 degrees.

Note: If glaze seems to be sticking to bottom of pan, add a small amount of water.
