Old Bay Beer Can Chicken
Old Bay Beer Can Chicken was quite the extra special dinner recipe for us the other night…and we were even lucky to have some leftovers to snack on.
A whole smoked chicken, made super moist with beer, and simply seasoned with garlic butter and Old Bay.
Are you drooling yet?
Because I sure am 🙂
Old Bay is a seasoning I use often because it’s a perfect blend of flavors that doesn’t require much else. In this case I did mix it with butter and garlic.
How to Make Old Bay Beer Can Chicken
For the beer can chicken just pat a whole chicken dry with paper towels.
This is so the Old Bay garlic butter sticks to the chicken.
Then either pour out half of a can of beer, or drink half of it (I opted for the second choice 😉 ) .
Then sit the chicken upright on the can of beer.
Rub the Old Bay garlic butter on all sides of the chicken and then sprinkle more Old Bay over all sides as well.
The chicken will sit fine on just the beer can.
But you may notice from the picture I have a metal stand for mine.
My pretty awesome husband got this stand for me and it does make the chicken a little more sturdy and easier to move around.
We smoked this chicken in our Traeger smoker set to 275 degrees for about 4 hours.
This is a six pound bird, so a smaller chicken may require less time.
Taking the temp using a thermometer is highly recommended to ensure it’s at 170 degrees.
You could certainly bake the Old Bay Beer Can Chicken in the oven as well.
I would recommend placing the oven rack on a lower level to make room for the chicken.
And also making sure you have a pan underneath to catch the drippings.
However you cook it, it’s a scrumptious and extra special dinner for sure and I hope you enjoy 🙂

Old Bay Beer Can Chicken
Old Bay Beer Can Chicken has a garlic and butter rub with Old Bay seasoning, then smoked in a Traeger or smoker, or it can be baked in the oven!
Ingredients
- 1 whole chicken (4 to 6 pounds)

- 4 Tbsps butter at room temp
- 1 Tbsp garlic paste or minced garlic
- 1 Tbsp Old Bay Seasoning (plus more to sprinkle over top)
Instructions
-
Pat the chicken dry with paper towels.

Open the beer and pour 1/2 of the beer out (or drink it). Put the beer can in a foil pan or tray and sit the chicken cavity over the can, adjust the chicken so it is sitting upright on the can.
-
In a bowl mix together the butter, garlic, and Old Bay. Rub this mixture over all sides of the chicken. Then sprinkle all sides with more Old Bay Seasoning.

In the smoker: Set the smoker to 275 degrees, place the chicken on the smoker for approx 4 hours, depending on size of chicken. Internal temp should be 170 degrees.
