Smoked Cajun Garlic Butter Chicken

Smoked Cajun Garlic Butter Chicken

I wanted to spoil our friends, so I made a recipe for Smoked Cajun Garlic Butter Chicken.

We are pretty darn lucky to have them as our amazing neighbors, and we love having them come over for chill patio nights and for dinner.

It’s pretty much a weekend tradition around here to have something smoking in our Traeger Grill/Smoker in the summer.

Wings…ribs…pork shoulder…brisket…and in this case a whole smoked cajun chicken 🙂

How to make Smoked Cajun Garlic Butter Chicken

It starts with some melted butter, cajun seasoning, and garlic paste.

You could use fresh minced garlic if you don’t have garlic paste.

Garlic Paste

Rub this all over the chicken and in between the skin over the breasts as well.

Save some of this cajun garlic butter for brushing over the chicken as it cooks.

I like a little extra cajun seasoning sprinkled over top as well.

Place the chicken on the smoker set to 225 degrees for about 4 to 5 hours.

It really depends on the size of the chicken and all smokers vary in temperature.

Use a thermometer to make sure it’s at 170 degrees.

Maybe my favorite part is brushing with the cajun garlic butter every hour or so.

It gives me a good excuse to take a peek and admire the yumminess 🙂

The combo of the cajun and garlic had our patio smelling pretty darn amazing!

When it was finally time for dinner the Smoked Cajun Garlic Butter Chicken did not disappoint.

You could make a little extra of the cajun garlic butter to dip, but it really was perfect on its own.

And if you don’t have a smoker this can be baked in a 400 degree oven for about an hour 🙂

Ingredients

  • 6 Tbsps melted butter
  • 1 1/2 Tbsps cajun seasoning (plus more to sprinkle over top)
  • 1 1/2 Tbsps garlic paste (or fresh minced garlic)
  • 5-6 pound whole chicken

Instructions

  1. Combine the melted butter, cajun seasoning, and garlic in a bowl. Stir until evenly mixed.

  2. Rub two third of the cajun garlic butter over all sides of the whole chicken, separate the skin on the breasts and rub some of the butter between the skin and chicken breasts as well. Set the remaining one third of the butter aside to brush over top later. Sprinkle more cajun seasoning over top of the chicken if desired.

  3. Place in a smoker set to 225 degrees for 4-5 hours or until the internal temp is 170 degrees. Brush with the remaining cajun garlic butter every hour.

Note: Can also be baked in the oven at 400 degrees for 1 hour, or until internal temp is 170 degrees
