Pizza Pretzel Sticks

Pizza Pretzel Sticks

This weekend we made this recipe for Pizza Pretzel Sticks and they were quite popular with everyone đŸ™‚

Snacky snack weekend dinners are pretty routine around here.

You gotta live it up a little on the weekends, right?!

To me that means fun snack food instead of a regular meal (and feel free to question my definition of “living it up” -haha).

I used to be intimidated by making pretzels, as I am not a baker at all!

However, I tested out using store bought pizza crust and now making pretzels is a snap.

How to make Pizza Pretzel Sticks

These pizza pretzels are stuffed with pepperoni and mozzarella cheese.

I started with a 16 ounce block of mozzarella that I cut into 16 cheese sticks.

Next up we have two tubes of pizza crust, I used Pillsbury but any brand will do.

Unroll the crust and roll it out a bit.

Then, using a pizza cutter, cut each crust into 8 rectangles.

I sure did try to make them even, they aren’t perfect but darn close đŸ˜‰

Next lay three pieces of pepperoni and a cheese stick in the center of each rectangle.

And a little sprinkle of Italian seasoning.

Fold the sides of the dough in and pinch the seams.

Pinching and sealing them will prevent any cheese leakage during baking.

But hey, if some cheese does leak out when baking them it’s no worries, just stuff it right back in…it’s just as yummy.

After you have all 16 pretzels sticks stuffed and sealed, boil 8 cups of water and add 1/3 cup baking soda in.

Reduce the heat to simmer.

Then place each cheesy pretzel stick on a fork and dip into the baking soda water for 5 seconds.

Once removed with the fork place it on a lined baking sheet.

Dip your Pizza Pretzel Sticks in some marinara or pizza sauce if you like.

Ingredients

  • 2 13.8 oz tubes pizza dough (I used Pillsbury)
  • 1 16 oz block mozzarella cheese
  • 48 slices pepperoni
  • Italian seasoning
  • 8 cups water
  • 1/3 cup baking soda
  • 1 egg
  • kosher salt
  • Optional: pizza sauce for dipping

Instructions

  1. Lay the pizza dough flat, roll it out slightly, and cut each pizza dough crust into 8 equal rectangles.

  2. Cut the block of mozzarella cheese into 16 equal size cheese sticks (pictures in post above)

  3. Place 3 pieces of pepperoni and a cheese stick in the center of each pizza dough rectangle.

  4. Sprinkle with Italian seasoning.

  5. Fold the dough over the pepperoni and cheese filling and pinch closed, trying not to stretch the dough too much.

  6. Bring 8 cups of water to a boil, reduce heat to simmer and stir in the baking soda.

  7. Place a pizza pretzel on a fork (not poking through the dough, just on top, pictures in post above) and gently dip it in the simmer water for 5 seconds. Lift it out of the water and place on a lined baking sheet. Repeat with remaining pizza pretzels.

  8. Beat the egg in a bowl and brush the tops of each with the egg and sprinkle with kosher salt.

  9. Bake in a 400 degree oven for 12 to 14 minutes.
