Crab Cakes with Spicy Old Bay Mayo
My dad came to cook with me!!! We had a blast making his recipe for Crab Cakes with Spicy Old Bay Mayo together.
And to teach me how to make his famous crab cakes!
I mean, the guy did totally ruin all other crab cakes for me, just because his are SO freaking delicious.
So the least he could do is teach me his secrets, right?! 😉
True story!
A few years ago I was at his house watching Food Network with him and they were making crab cakes.
I was like “Oh, I could totally go for some crab cakes right now.”
And my dad says without a second thought “I can make some. I have all the ingredients.”
Ummmm…Ok! I mean who just has all the ingredients for crab cakes just laying around?!
My dad…that’s who 😉
How to make Crab Cakes with Spicy Old Bay Mayo
This scrumptious dish starts with a bunch of diced up veggies.
A red and yellow bell pepper, onion, celery, and green onions.
Then into a large skillet over medium heat with some olive oil, salt, and pepper.
This cooks about 8-10 minutes.
Next step is adding a stick of butter. Yes, a whole stick!
I’m guessing THAT may why they are so amazing 🙂
Also add some garlic paste, lemon juice, Old Bay, thyme, and ground red pepper.
Let this cook for another few minutes and then add the rock star of this dish…the lump crab!
Gently fold in the crab and taste for seasoning.
Add more kosher salt, pepper, Old Bay if needed.
You’ll need to be patient at this point.
This needs to come to room temperature before folding in 2 beaten eggs.
If you put the eggs in while this is hot you’ll have scrambled eggs. No good.
Once everything is cool and the eggs are mixed in it’s time to form the cakes.
If the mixture is too thin and not able to be formed into cakes, just add more bread crumbs.
Place the crab cakes on a lined baking sheet or tray.
Then set them in the fridge for at least 1 hour before cooking them.
Making the Spicy Old Bay Mayo
While they set up in the fridge you could make the Spicy Old Bay Mayo.
Combine mayo, Sriracha, lemon juice, and Old Bay in a bowl.
Set that aside to drizzle over top.
These beauties will cook in a skillet over medium heat with a little olive oil. 3-4 minutes per side is all it takes.
Flip them gently because they are delicate.
Drum roll please…they are done and ready to be devoured!
Crab Cakes with Spicy Old Bay Mayo will hopefully become a new favorite in your family like it is in mine 🙂

Crab Cakes with Spicy Old Bay Mayo
My dad's tried and true recipe for the best crab cakes ever!
Ingredients
Crab Cakes
- 1 red pepper
- 1 yellow pepper
- 1 onion
- 3 celery stalks
- 3 green onions
- olive oil, kosher salt, pepper
- 1 stick butter
- 1 Tbsp garlic paste
- 1 Tbsp lemon juice
- 1/2 Tbsp Old Bay seasoning
- 1 tsp dried thyme
- 1/4 tsp ground red pepper
- 1 cup Italian bread crumbs
- 1/2 cup grated parmesan or romano cheese
- 1 pound cooked lump crab meat
- 2 eggs beaten
Spicy Old Bay Mayo
- 1 cup mayo
- 2-4 Tbsps Sriracha (depending on spice preference)
- 1 Tbsp lemon juice
- 3/4 Tbsp Old Bay seasoning
Instructions
-
Dice the red and yellow peppers, onion, celery, and green onions. Drizzle olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat and add the peppers, onions, celery, and green onions, season with kosher salt and pepper. Cook 8-10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
-
Add the stick of butter, garlic paste, lemon juice, Old Bay, thyme, and ground red pepper. Cook 3-5 more minutes over medium heat, stirring occasionally. Vegetables should be soft, but still slightly crisp.
-
Turn the heat off and add the bread crumbs and cheese. Stir until evenly mixed. Gently fold in the crab meat. Taste for seasoning and add more kosher salt, pepper, Old Bay, or ground red pepper if needed. Let this come to room temperature.
Note: This must come to room temperature before adding the eggs because if it’s too hot the eggs will cook.
-
Stir in the beaten eggs. If this mixture is not thick enough to form into cakes, add more bread crumbs if needed.
-
Form 12 crab cakes and lay on a lined baking sheet or tray. Refrigerate at least 1 hour.
-
In a skillet over medium heat add olive oil and 4 crab cakes. Cook 3-5 minutes per side. Repeat with remaining crab cakes. Serve with Spicy Old Bay Mayo.
Note: Crab cakes are delicate, so gently flipping them will prevent breaking.
